Chapter 2 - Full-time Dance

It’s all happening.

I am still unemployed (as of tomorrow), but I know that for the next two months I will be dancing full-time. In one of my earlier posts, I mentioned that I applied for the Soft Landing workshop. I knew they were only taking 6-9 people, and when I didn’t get an answer on the 7th of July, I thought that my application was not up to scratch. I did, however, send them an e-mail asking if the unsuccessful applicants would be informed of their incompetence and the usual ‘good luck for your future’ message. I got a reply saying they had extended the deadline till the 17th of July (which was yesterday).

I got another e-mail from them last night and I am a successful applicant. Folks, I’m off to Canberra next month!

I’m excited to do a choreography-based workshop. I think it will be good for me to create something, and take my mind off the whole ‘I’m unemployed’ thing. The guy who is conducting the workshop is Brian Lucas, who is a dancer/actor who has worked all over Australia. I’m also relieved to know that I don’t have to rack my brain to figure out what to do for the next month.

The rest of my year seems to be panning out quite well:

3rd -30th August: Soft Landing 2 (Canberra)
31st-13th September: Tasdance secondment (Launceston)
14th-20th (and maybe longer) September: Sydney Dance Company (Sydney)
11th October: Melbourne Ballet Company audition (Melbourne)
12th-23rd October: Leigh Warren & Dancers secondment (Adelaide)

I think that’s pretty good for someone who has fallen over and needs to pick himself up again. If nothing comes out of this year, then I still have some secondments lined up for next year. I don’t know how long I will keep trying, but at this point giving up is certainly not an option.
